It’s one of the most anticipated games of the decade, but we still don’t know what to expect when Grand Theft Auto 6 graces the consoles fully. What we do know is that it is officially on the way; Rockstar has said as much. We don’t know when that will be exactly, but there is a huge amount of information about what to expect from the latest GTA offering.
Shortly after Rockstar announced GTA 6 to be on the horizon, there was a leak with some potential insight on what we’ll get. Obviously, that could all change, but we’ve been piecing together all the news stories, insights and information, so you know what to expect when GTA 6 is finally released.
When will GTA 6 be released?
That’s the million-dollar question which we all want to be answered. But unfortunately, it’s one that we’re still no closer to knowing. Back in 2022, Rockstar staff estimated that GTA 6 was at least two years away from being released, which would suggest a 2024/2025 launch. So, there’s still a wait.
Which consoles will GTA 6 be released on?
Again, there’s no new information on which platforms GTA 6 will launch on, but it’s safe to say that it’ll be making an appearance on the latest consoles. So when the game is finally released, it’s likely to be for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, plus the PS5.
One thing to watch out for, though, is if you’re still getting the most out of your PS4 and Xbox One – these older consoles don’t get the same release dates. And if history is anything to go by, it could even be a year or two after the initial release.

Where will the game take place?
When GTA 4 was released, we joined Niko on an adventure around Liberty City. Then GTA 5 gave us an even bigger map of San Andreas, which leaves one area which fans desperately want to revisit – Vice City, Rockstar’s take on Miami. With GTA games released on other consoles, such as the classic trilogy released on Nintendo Switch, more and more people are enjoying Tommy Vercetti and the bright lights of Vice City
Of course, it’d be great to see what the legendary protagonist is up to – fans have been calling it for years. Though with the death of voice actor Ray Liotta, this does seem unlikely. But you never know. Rumours are spreading like wildfire that GTA 6 will take place in Vice City, but the map won’t be limited to the area, with plenty of places to explore.
Rockstar has also announced that they plan to release new cities and missions regularly, so the upcoming game has endless potential!
What will the missions be like?
GTA has a formula that works. Character-driven story missions, random encounters, races, heists, casino experiences and more. It’s likely that this is going to continue in the next game, but on a bigger, better scale. But will the Diamond Casino Resort survive?
If it’s set in Vice City, we hope it should. If the casino storylines continue, we expect players will be able to experience a wider number of games, including the strategy of poker, which was missing from GTA 5 but is part of other major Rockstar titles like Red Dead Redemption 2. Fingers crossed.
Who are the characters?
While we’d, of course, love to see Tommy Vercetti appear in some shape or form. Rockstar is great in creating new characters for each game that lives on in history – Trevor Phillips is still a name most gamers will recognise.
The leaked footage and reports claim that there will be a female protagonist this time round and a male – almost like a Bonnie and Clyde crime duo. Rather than selecting a character’s gender like in Assassin Creed, the switching character function from GTA V will likely reappear. This will give players more stories for each character and huge replayability value as you take on missions from a different perspective.
In GTA 5, we got to see some previous characters appear again, such as Patrick McReary joining as a heist member and Johnny Klebitz appearing as…well…an addict that didn’t really last that long, thanks to Trevor! So who knows if Michael, Trevor and Franklin will show up again, or many of the other supporting cast – there’s always a possibility.

There you have it. You can search as much as you like for information about GTA 6, but Rockstar remains tight-lipped about the game’s content and release date.
