Remember Phantom Abyss? You know, the asynchronous multiplayer game that tasks you with delving into ancient, labyrinthine tombs in order to find the treasures hidden within? Yeah, well today it finally comes out of Early Access to launch as version 1.0. And it’s doing so on Game Pass, Xbox and PC.
Now in 1.0
Phantom Abyss first dropped towards our eyes at the back end of 2022. At that time it was all about enjoying the Early Access / Game Preview vibes, much like the phenom that is Palworld is doing now. Phantom Abyss requested you to run a gauntlet though, as fast as you could.
We descended into Phantom Abyss and quite enjoyed what was on offer. But now it’s time for Devolver Digital and Team WIBY to push forth with a full launch and so that’s where we are today with release on Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam. We think it’s pretty safe to say that Phantom Abyss has undergone a dramatic transformation, culminating in the long-awaited, massively improved, and greatly expanded launch of the 1.0 version of the game.
“Phantom Abyss 1.0 is the result of countless hours of development, meticulous iteration, and unwavering attention to our incredible community,” says Team WIBY creative director Ben Marrinan. “It’s the game we always dreamed of crafting and we hope you dive into the adventure with as much passion as we poured into creating it.”
New games modes hit Phantom Abyss on Game Pass
Priced at £20.99 on the Xbox Store, or available through a Game Pass subscription, Phantom Abyss goes live without the usual singular temple. Now it has been replaced by a trilogy of modes – Adventure, Abyss and Daily.
- Adventure Mode – Embark on curated journeys through hand-crafted temples, each featuring a unique whip, relic, and set of challenges.
- Abyss Mode – Face the ultimate test in the classic, ever-changing, procedurally-generated temple. Only one explorer can claim its hidden glory.
- Daily Mode – Hone your skills with fresh twists on familiar trials, served up each day for a new taste of adventure.
There’s also a dynamic arsenal of whips to unlock, a mysterious new area called The Rift, and permanent upgrades to help you delve deeper into the darkness.
Tackling what is on offer should be a cinch for veteran Phantom Abyss players. But even those coming in now that the full 1.0 release is in hand should be well suited. Basically though, if you want to prove yourself down in the dungeons, dodging traps and obstacles uncovering relics, Phantom Abyss allows for it.

Phantom Abyss Description
Phantom Abyss is a massive asynchronous multiplayer game that casts players into procedurally-generated temples and tasks them with retrieving the sacred relics hidden within deadly chambers. Intrepid adventurers will dodge scores of hidden traps, leap treacherous chasms, and flee relentless guardians through branching paths until one of the relics are claimed or the devices of death overwhelm them. Be warned, you only get one attempt at each temple and failure or settling for a lesser relic means you will never see that temple again… The cleverest players will use the phantom runs of failed attempts from other players to their advantage and avoid the missteps and mistakes that led to their doom.
